Work & Technique
The forty-year long creative period of the Rijeka-based artist Dražen Filipović Pegla reveals a range of creative interests and searches in painting, sculpture and design, as his artistic opus covers installations and sculptures, objects and reliefs, collages and interiors, and especially the paintings and drawings on which he has left the deepest imprint, both in originality and message.
His artistic career began in the 1980s as a figurative painter, but at the solo exhibition Synthesis of Contradictions in 1996 in the Little Salon in Rijeka, his works became increasingly directed towards his own search, drawing from his own knowledge, beliefs and feelings. Drawing from the postulates of the abstract art treasury, he devoted his work to exploring shapes, compositions, new materials, technical possibilities and combinations, and considered the harmony and balance of all the elements that filled the image base, whilst he focuses as an author entirely on drawing that is in harmony with colour, as its most important means of expression.
Filipovič’s painting is visually exciting and appealing, problematizing new paradigms and new media in contemporary art, as well as the relationship and interaction of a classical painterly approach with contemporary digital media.
His rich oeuvre defines several stylistically, formally and structurally different cycles, shared by a recognizable author’s manuscript, which is characterized by both the unification and the subtle accentuation of the duality of either geometric and organic or decorative and structural vision, as well as highlighting the synergy of the painting, sculpture and design approach. Art critics emphasize expressiveness and suggestibility on one hand and synthetics and minimalistic subtlety on the other, and they especially highlight his
manuscript, which they define as painterly, since it gives his paintings a special texture, in one of the cycles, associating with the technique of weaving or embroidery that he achieves with fascinating discipline and sophistication in performance.
With his selection of works, the artist presents himself as an extremely insightful, sentient, original and subtle painter, who has captured the spirit of the time as-well-as the environment that belongs to him in his artistic search.
